Maria Amabilis de Souza director and choreographer of Aquarela Dance Group and Samba School, is a native Brazilian from Monte Allegre, Minas Gerais and has been living in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1980. In 1986 she founded Aquarela Dance Ensemble under the umbrella of the Brazilian dance and cultural association Sambão para o Povo. In 1995 she was elected Carnaval Queen of San Francisco and as such headed the Grand Parade on Memorial Day weekend of 1995. Maria is also an educator in a local pre-school and teaches regular Samba classes open to the public in Berkeley. Since 2004, Maria is proud mom of Gisele Gabriela, Aquarela's youngest member.
